NEWS & EVENTS
CICS Ralph Ellison juniors Tenia and Shandale will get the chance to expand their college search out-of-state in hopes of finding the best university to fit their long-term goals. In the pursuit of the best-fit college, these two award winning scholars will have the opportunity to visit prestigious out-of-state colleges with a family member thanks to the generosity of the Henderson family and Invest in Others, an organization which supports and encourages the philanthropic and volunteer efforts of financial advisors within their local communities.
Craig Henderson, CICS Board Member, is founder of the investment-counseling firm, C.W. Henderson and Associates. He was selected as a finalist for the Invest in Others Foundation’s prestigious Community Leadership Award among hundreds of nominations. As part of this recognition, a generous contribution was made to CICS in Craig’s honor. He and his family established the College Search Fund to support CICS families in making informed college choices and hope it will provide a model for others interested in supporting the college aspirations of urban youth.
How has your charity (or those it serves) benefited from the Invest in Others donation?
Two exceptional high school juniors have their sights set on out-of-state colleges, which they will each have the opportunity to visit with a family member this year thanks to the Invest in Others donation. This gift has allowed us to establish the Craig W. Henderson College Search Fund. In addition to helping two families make informed college choices, we hope it will provide a model for others interested in supporting the college aspirations of urban youth.
Sending a child away to school can be difficult many reasons. Some concerns can be alleviated by simply visiting the school and speaking with people there; however, few of the families that CICS serves have resources for travel outside the Chicago area. These two will have the opportunity to assess first-hand which of the colleges and universities that look perfect in glossy brochures are truly a good fit for their student. Parents who are confident that their child will be safe, cared for and academically challenged are much more likely to encourage a college choice that is far from home.
Which of your charity’s programs specifically received the Invest in Others donation?
Students attending CICS Ralph Ellison, a high school campus founded by Craig Henderson, are the beneficiaries of the Invest in Others donation.
Providing students with the opportunity to visit colleges is critical to the college-preparatory mission of CICS. Many of our elementary and high school students take field trips to nearby campuses, but there are few resources like this available to support longer trips or to include family members whose opinions matter in the decision making process.
Were there any specific goals (or projects) it helped your charity accomplish?
Tenia B. is excited to speak in person with faculty and students in the sports medicine program at UCLA. Shandale W. aspires to become an electrical engineer and so much more. He will be visiting Morehouse College and Bucknell University.
