CICS Bucktown Students Meet the Mayor

May 20, 2014

On April 2nd, 16 middle school students from CICS Bucktown headed to the Loop in downtown Chicago to witness government in action, but only after proving their knowledge of government on paper. All of the students on the trip had recently passed their constitution exams, and they did so with the help of Sandra Murphy, an attorney turned super-volunteer who is a regular fixture at CICS Bucktown. read more …

CICS Wrightwood Alum Wins Top Honors for Colon Cancer Research

April 29, 2014

Keven Stonewall is tackling cancer before it begins, utilizing secondary immunology research to develop an experimental vaccine for colon cancer. His research won top honors at the 2013 Intel ISEF (International Science and Engineering Fair) – the world’s largest pre-college science competition. Keven is also a published researcher in the Journal for ImmunoTherapy of Cancer and has been presented with several awards throughout his community - all before graduating with his Bachelor’s degree. Keven is singularly doing the work of most postgraduate degree students. read more …

CICS Ralph Ellison Scholars share original poems at Poetry Night

As April comes to an end, the Schuler Scholar Program (SSP) at CICS Ralph Ellison is finishing the celebration of National Poetry Month. Through engaging Ellison Scholars with poems like the excerpt from Burroughs’ poem “What Shall I Tell My Children Who Are Black?” we have been able to celebrate as well as critically analyze poetry from African American poets. Similar to our Black History Month project, Ellison Scholars prepared and presented daily facts and read poetry during advisory announcements. read more …

PRESS RELEASE: CICS Irving Park students raise $6,300 for Leukemia & Lymphoma Society

CHICAGO – Students at a local campus of Chicago International Charter School (CICS) have rallied around a kindergarten student who is battling cancer, including record-breaking fundraising for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Sophia Bahena, who will turn six on May 12, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (“ALL”) in January 2013, while she was a pre-school student at the Grover Cleveland Elementary School. She missed the second half of the school year to undergo a variety of treatments, including chemotherapy and several surgeries. read more …

PwC Chicago Invests in Financial Literacy and Youth Education with Local Organizations

April 14, 2014

A grant was also given to Chicago International Charter School (CICS) for $75,000 to support after school and enrichment programs on CICS campuses. CICS is a network of K-12 public charter schools with the mission to provide a college-preparatory education that meets the needs of today's student. As part of the grant, CICS also plans to implement a program based on the firm's Earn Your Future financial literacy curricula to create workshops for students in grades 3-12 at CICS Longwood. read more …
