CICS Scholar Wins Citywide Stock Portfolio Competition

Through Magnetar Youth Investment Academy, a financial literacy program for high school students, CICS Northtown Academy scholar Sheryl Acar and her classmates learned how to build and maintain stock portfolios.  In a competition which drew 650 students from 25 other high schools, Sheryl's mock portfolio produced the highest returns and was the overall top-performing submission. In addition to winning the competition, Sheryl will receive a $5,000 college scholarship. Congratulations to Sheryl and all of the scholars at CICS Northtown for their hard work!

Thank you to Magnetar Youth Investment Academy for partnering with Mr. Scheid and the CICS Northtown staff and scholars to teach lifelong financial skills.

Magnetar Academy Announces 28 Scholarship Winners
Chicago Students Earn Scholarships in Stock Portfolio Competition
December 21, 2015

CHICAGO – Magnetar Academy announced today that Sheryl Acar from CICS Northtown Academy was awarded a $5,000 college scholarship, and 27 additional students were awarded $1,000 college scholarships, as part of a stock portfolio competition with over 650 students from across Chicago.
The student with the top-performing portfolio at each school was awarded a $1,000 scholarship and the overall top-performing portfolio, submitted by Acar, was awarded a $5,000 scholarship. The full list of schools are below.
“The Magnetar Academy curriculum provides students with a foundation of personal finance and investment knowledge and then gives them the opportunity to apply what they’ve learned, using technology, to compete with others students across Chicago for college scholarships. This is a real motivator,” said Nyasha Nyamapfene, Managing Director of Magnetar Capital Foundation.
The competition represents the culmination of over 30 hours of financial education that students completed through the Magnetar Academy program. In building their portfolios, students were encouraged to apply concepts learned in class such as diversification and risk management. Over the course of six months, students had opportunities to reassess the market and rebalance their portfolios. All students, regardless of portfolio performance, received with $100 in seed funding for participating.
Since 2011, Magnetar Academy has provided over $200,000 in student scholarships and school grants. Magnetar Academy is a free, 30-hour financial education program that uses technology, teamwork, and competition to teach high school students how to make smart financial decisions. Students learn about budgeting, borrowing, saving, investing, and other financial topics. The program is currently taught in over 150 Chicago classrooms and is offered to high schools for free and funded by the Magnetar Capital Foundation.
