Celebrating Black History and Significant Moments from across our schools

This February, our schools joined communities across the nation in celebrating Black History Month — a time dedicated to honoring the rich heritage and lasting contributions of Black Americans throughout history. Across classrooms and campuses, our students engaged in meaningful activities that brought culture, history, and community to life in a real and personal way.

From celebrating the bonds of community and togetherness, to savoring the incredible traditions of African American cuisine, to discovering powerful Black History Moments that have shaped our world, each activity has been an opportunity to learn, grow, and develop a deeper appreciation for the people and stories that have made our nation stronger. Below are some wonderful moments our students have experienced.

Highlights from Across Our Schools

Throughout the month, our campuses came alive with student-led projects, creative performances, and hands-on learning experiences that made Black history feel personal and immediate. Here are just a few standout moments:

Black History Month Museum Exhibit
Our CICS Wrightwood Elementary second and third grade students proudly showcased their learning during the Black History Month Museum Exhibit, where they brought influential figures to life through research and presentation. In preparation, families partnered with us by supporting students at home, helping them practice, gather materials, and build confidence. We are grateful for the strong connection between home and school that helped make this celebration of Black history both impactful and memorable.

Connecting School and Home at CICS West Belden
CICS West Belden found a creative way to keep Black History Month alive all month long — and bring it home to families, too. Through a weekly newsletter and a dedicated hallway bulletin board, the team introduced students and their families to remarkable Black pioneers in fields like science, architecture, and global culture — figures whose stories often go untold in traditional textbooks. It was a thoughtful effort to broaden our students' understanding of just how wide and deep Black contributions to our world truly are.

Black History Month Trivia Family Game Night at CICS Basil
Our CICS Basil campus recently hosted a Black History Month Trivia Family Game Night, bringing students and families together for an evening of connection, celebration, and shared learning. As families tested their knowledge and celebrated the richness of our shared history, the event created meaningful moments of fellowship and pride.

Each of these moments reflects what Black History Month is all about at our schools: giving students the space to explore, create, and connect with the people and stories that have shaped our world. We are so proud of the creativity, dedication, and heart our students and staff brought to this month's celebrations — and we look forward to continuing this important work all year long.
