Three CICS Students Named Posse Scholars
CICS is proud to share that three students have been accepted as Posse Scholars! Katlyn, Rebecca, and Darriana will join a network of what the Posse Foundation describes as "positive, motivated, talented, ambitious young people" who are "committed to their education and demonstrate academic potential." All three students will receive a full, four-year scholarship to the college they will attend next year.
Our staff connected with Katlyn, Rebecca, and Darriana to learn more about what motivates them and find out their plans for after graduation.

How has CICS ChicagoQuest prepared you for college?
CQ has prepared me for college by showing me, initially, what passionate and talented leaders look like in their element, and, later on, what it takes to fight for an underfunded education and the pitfalls of a privatized education system.
What motivates you?
I'm motivated by a deep sense of idealism, founded in my Catholic upbringing.
What activities are you involved in?
At CQ, I was involved in Student Council, Student Librarians, GayStraight Alliance, Poetry Club, French Club, Cheerleading, and National Honor Society. Outside of CQ, I worked at the ChicagoLights Urban Farm, a nonprofit urban farm that gave internships and apprenticeships to youths; and I currently work at Mariano's.
What are you most looking forward to at Pomona College?
I'm looking forward to the diverse perspectives available at Pomona and the rich outdoor and city life LA county offers.

How has CICS Northtown Academy prepared you for college?
Northtown has prepared me for college by providing opportunities for me to take rigorous classes, as well as the teachers who have always helped me improve on my academic weaknesses.
What activities are you involved in?
At Northtown, I have been an athlete throughout my four years of high school. I am part of the Varsity Girls Soccer team and Girls Tennis team. Not only that, but I am a committed member of Students Leaders and Pass with Flying Colors, as well as a Teaching Assistant. I love the opportunities for leadership that Northtown Academy has provided me.
What motivates you?
My motivation begins with my family. I want to make them proud.
Did you have any life changing experiences that put you on the path to where you are now as a Posse Scholar?
My mother’s side of the family did not have the opportunity to go to college nor finish school and that has made life difficult for our family. This has impacted my perspective of education because I have been given opportunities that I feel strongly I should take advantage of and will provide a better life for me and my family. I want to inspire others and make a positive impact on the world by helping others.

How has CICS Ralph Ellison prepared you for college?
Ralph Ellison, by far, is extremely strict when it comes to deadlines, and I had to really practice time management. The teachers have constantly stressed to me the importance of organization and independent studying. All of these skills are essential as a college student. I have felt endless support throughout high school from my teachers here at Ralph Ellison, and I have acquired many life lessons that I can further use in college.
What activities are you involved in?
I participate in a program called After School Matters. I learned to tumble, practice self-defense, and improve on my leadership skills. For our senior project, we had to volunteer at an organization and complete a total of 30 hours. However, unlike some of the other students, I volunteer there in my own free time. I am a member of the National Honor Society and I am a member of the student council. Also, I am employed, as of this year.
What are you most looking forward to at Connecticut College this fall?
Many people have told me that when I arrive in Connecticut, I will experience a culture shock. I am actually looking forward to that. I am interested in meeting new people, and learning more about people who might have different traditions or beliefs than I do. Also, because I attend a predominantly black school, I have not had many interactions with people outside of my race for four years, and I think that is so important to have that exposure. I am also just looking forward to a new place, new beginning, and the college experience, whether that includes studying abroad, getting involved in a student organization, or preparing for my future career. Most of all, I am looking forward to an exciting four years with my Posse at Connecticut College!
